WEVL 89.9 FM - Volunteer Radio

I saw this logo posted on someone's facebook feed the other day, as they had "become a fan." I've always been super critical of the Memphis radio environment. You've got FM 100 playing whatever pop/top 40 drivel they have fed to them by the mainstream media (and certain, un-named reality shows that I think are the cause of the decline of Western civilization), 104 the River, which is mainly for offices or, no offense, people without any musical taste (they just play the stuff that FM100 stopped playing a couple of years ago cause its no longer "hip") and Rock 103, which has surprisingly remained fairly consistent throughout the years. Unfortunately for me, the older I get, the "fossil rock" they play seems to sound more and more ancient.
Enter 89.9 FM. It's run by volunteers, so you get little two hour blocks of different genres all the time. I had recently started listening to our country station (KIX 106) but all country all the time gets old quick (I can safely say that now about any genre). That is what's so great about WEVL. You get two hours of rock, two hours of country, two hours of freaking zydeco and so on and so forth. They are taking applications for volunteer dj's and I've never been more tempted to do something than apply.
Check them out. Listen to them. I can honestly say, that since I tuned to them in my car, I have not changed the station. Try it, you'll like it. You'll get to see some of the fruits of their labor when I start posting about all the new (to me) bands that I like! In the words of my daughter Charlotte, "this gonna be exciting!"
