Boston overpaid.

Wednesday, August 01, 2007

Yeah, you read that right. Boston traded 5 current players and 2 future players (in the form of future draft picks) for Kevin Garnett. This trade had existed in some format (rumored or otherwise) since right before the draft, but, according to reports, Boston kept turning it down for not wanting to part with Al Jefferson. I realize that KG has had the longest active tenure with the same team (12 seasons?), has been an all star for 10 of those seasons and was the MVP back in the 2003-04 season. But seven players? Boston basically traded an entire starting team plus the sixth man, plus the seventh man. I know most of those guys probably won't ever amount to much (probably not anywhere near KG type numbers, save Al Jefferson) but KG has never been to the finals, and obviously never won the finals. Hasn't been to the playoffs in at least 2 years. He's 31 (not terribly old), but he was drafted when he was what, 18 (right out of high-school, don't forget)?

Now that I've said all this, I'm sure Boston will win like the next three NBA championships, but still 7-1 ratio does not seem to make a lot of sense.
