1995-2007: Lloyd Carr - the end of an era

Sunday, November 18, 2007

Head Coach Lloyd Carr resigned his post of the past 13 years at the University of Michigan today. Carr compiled a record at Michigan of 141-20, which included Big Ten titles in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2004 and a national title in 1997. This season, as noted ad nauseum elsewhere, started with the first ever loss of a ranked Football Bowl Subdivision team (the Wolverines were ranked 5th to start the season) to a Football Championship Subdivision team (Appalachin State), followed by the worst home loss at the Big House (39-7 vs Oregon) since 1968. The Appalachin St. game was especially hard to stomach since the Wolverines lost by two and had previously in the second half gone for two points after touchdowns, failing on both attempts. Overall, I'd say Lloyd Carr had a good run. Coaching for 13 years at the same school is hard enough in this day and age. To win 5 conference titles makes it that much more difficult. Winning a national title is something that very few individuals can claim. Happy trails to you Coach Carr, wherever you may roam!
