Wilco by Wilco from the album Wilco

Monday, June 15, 2009

Ok, I'm putting you on alert that this is not the #MusicMonday post that you were hoping, nay dying for, but a post of a different kind altogether. Well, not altogether. It does involve music and it is Monday, but not related. Yes, 3 posts in one day, just stay with me.

I liked Wilco from the first time I heard their debut album A.M. several years ago. I'd be the first to admit that they were not the best band in the world and that they were not even in the running for acclaimed title of "Matt's all time favorite." I also had one of those opinions that I hate to have about groups that their first cd was their best and it kind of went downhill from there (both Mermaid Avenue's being notable exceptions).

However, on June 30th, 2009, Wilco (the band) will release Wilco (the album). I've never been a big fan of the "self titled" release, and I've always felt that if you are going to do it, do it early, as opposed to later when you are more "established," but that's beside the point. Do it or don't, no deal breaker there. The problem in my opinion is the first track on the album, "Wilco (the song)."

I can't really abide by this. I mean, if they were going for a "we mock ourselves" style of music, I could maybe buy it, but this just seems kinda dumb. In their defense, I have not heard one second of music from this album, so it may be the greatest ever. I just have my doubts.
